The Poulshock Concerts

“A Love Affair With Music”

Norm&BarbaraPoulshock a

Water Music Festival sponsored a new event in 2009/2010.  In the spirit of long-time Peninsula residents Barbara and Normand Poulshock, and their personal love affair with music – a romance that has touched so many people through their teaching and cultural contributions over their long careers – “The Poulshock Concert Series – A Love Affair with Music” will now be an annual event featuring regional artists performing original music composed in the northwest. Honoring Barbara and Normand’s love of music and their love for each other, the annual concert will be held each February, on or around Valentine’s Day.  Check back for details on the next concert in the Poulshock Series, which will be held in February of 2011.

The Inaugural Season – 2009/2010

The Poulshock Concert Series featured several concerts, each with a different focus and time of year. The schedule built momentum, and increased public awareness of the new event – and it coincided with WMF’s 25th Anniversary last October when four Poulshock compositions were performed by the Rose City Mixed Quartet at the first of several events.

The main concert in the series was held February 14, 2010,  It was an exciting afternoon of music in a wide variety of forms and styles by Normand and Barbara Poulshock, from instruments in solo and ensembles, to vocal solo and choral. Several pieces were presented in their premiere performance, in particular the orchestration by Normand of four of Barbara’s settings of Emily Dickinson poems.

The Orpheus Youth Ensemble performed February 27 and 28.  The talented young people performed madrigals staged in traditional Renaissance costume in the first half of the concert. They then premiered works and arrangements by Director Barbara Poulshock, including three settings of Emily Dickinson poems, as well as her favorite Beef Stroganoff recipe set to music by her late husband Normand.
